Wheel alignment plays an important part in your vehicles performance. When a vehicles suspension is out of alignment it can lead to uneven wear on your tires which means you will need to replace them more regularly. It can also cause your vehicle to pull to the left or right which compromises your control and handling of the vehicle. Properly aligning your vehicles wheels involves checking the direction and angle of the wheels and correcting misaligned positions. The misalignment positions are described as toe in, toe out, positive camber or negative camber, positive caster or negative caster. The image below should further describes the misaligned positions compared to the 0° images which show how aligned wheels should look.
How do I know if my wheels need aligning?
- Your car will pull to the left or right
- The front end of your vehicle is shimmying, this usually happens after hitting a bump.
- Your steering wheel will no longer line up straight.
- Your tires will show signs of uneven wear.
If you notice any of the above while driving your vehicle get in touch with Omnius as soon as possible so one of our skilled mechanics can perform checks on your vehicle and correct any misalignments. UK law requires that your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyre for the vehicle type you are driving and for the purpose it is being used. This means fitting the correct tires to your vehicle and ensuring that they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (psi).
Your tyres must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of tread around the circumference of each tyre. For your safety it is recommended that you replace your tires before they reach the legal limit. Vehicle manufacturers typically recommend replacing your tyres when they reach 3mm as beyond this point you risk longer stopping times in wet conditions. For example, at 1.6mm it takes an additional two car lengths to stop at 50mph than compared to 3mm.
At Omnius we offer a tyre replacement service to order, most items being delivered same day or within 24 hours if ordered in the morning. When ordering wheel or tyres make sure to double check that you are giving us the correct sizes, many newer performance cars have different wheel and tyre sizes front and rear – please bear this in mind before ordering. See the image opposite for where to find your tyre size.
